The NYT today published an obituary for Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko who died at 83 in Tulsa, OK.. He was a poet of protest who eventually immigrated to the U.S. where he taught at the University level.

These lines of Yevtushenko’s refer to the horror of the 1941 mass slaughtering of Jews in the Ukrainian ravine Babi Yar.

There are no monuments over Babi Yar.
But the sheer cliff is like a rough tombstone.
It horrifies me.
